What to Expect at Your First Class
Nervous about trying a group fitness class? At Empower Fitness Maui, we create a welcoming, inclusive space for all bodies and experience levels- especially women and LGBTQ+ folks looking for something different from the typical gym.
Most women and queer folks feel intimidated and uncomfortable in traditional gyms. The fitness scene can be really scary. When you walk into our gym, you are greeted with friendly coaches and fellow members. We ask for your pronouns and learn about any injuries or limitations you have or have had. This gives us an understanding of how we can adapt the workout for you in order to keep you safe. Your coach will give you a quick tour of the gym space and what you can expect in the day’s class.
Classes are an hour long, starting with a group warm up. We all warm up together, but each person is going at a pace that feels good for them. We put a heavy focus on strength training. You never have to lift heavy weights if you don’t want to, but we’ll be there to push you if you do. Our coaches are there to guide you through the movements and find a weight load that feels right for you. After our structured strength training, we will have a conditioning piece. This is where the fun music and most of the sweat happens. The coach will go over the workout, demonstrate and review all movements, and make sure each person has a variation that suits their level. Then, we sweat together! Everyone goes at their own pace, but we work out as a collective. Before you know it, an hour has passed and it’s time for stretches and fist bumps.
What to bring? Shoes and water. Wear clothing that you feel comfortable moving and sweating in.
If you’re a Maui resident, your first class is free. Send us and email or text after checking our class schedule and let us know when you’d like to stop in. Visitors are always welcome for a $25 drop in fee or a week pass for $65.
